Principal Engineer Role (Powerplant & EPC Projects)

Our Client is looking to appoint a Principal Engineer to lead the departments commissioning input on the delivery of total power plant proposals and projects.

The applicant will need extensive experience in the commissioning and operation of coal and gas fired power plants (boiler, turbine and Balance of Plant).

This will be an office based position, located at corporate headquarters in West Sussex. It will require travel to the Company's other office locations as well as to site to support the project and interfacing with our clients, both in the UK and overseas.

 In addition to the technical knowledge, the candidate will need to possess strong leadership, management and people skills to successfully execute the work utilising and supported by the Company's global business units and functions.

Experience Required
  • A thorough understanding of the specific contract deliverables for Commissioning Services.
  • An extensive and appropriate understanding of the power plant boiler, turbine and BOP islands and systems.
  •  A thorough understanding of the Company’s product range, their manufacture, shipping, storage, prefabrication, erection, and operation as it affects commissioning.
  • A thorough understanding of power plant operation e.g. start-up, normal, shut down, etc. & maintenance.
  • A thorough understanding of the commissioning process including
o    Resource planning and cost control
o    Client training
o    Power receiving / back energisation
o    Chemical cleaning
o    Steam purging
o    Generator and exciter testing
o    Turbine protection systems and testing
o    Synchronisation
o    Load rejection tests
o    Float safety valves
o    Hot commissioning including start-up
o    Air pollution control equipment – Precipitator, bag house, SCR, FGD, etc
o    Controls tuning
o    Combustion optimisation
o    Demonstration of boiler, turbine and BOP island capabilities e.g. reliability run, starts, capability, ramp rates, etc
o    Island and power plant performance & emissions testing
  • To assist Sales, Proposals, & Project Operations in the pre – contract (enquiry) stage (write-ups, fuel quantities, etc.) and attend appropriate meetings.
  • To assist the Section Manager in preparation of commissioning budgets (estimated hours, costs, accommodation, travel, material, etc.) and resources.
  • To act as the single point of contact for Commissioning Services with Projects, and when appropriate to ensure that previous site operational experience is taken in to account.
Minimum Qualification(s)
HNC in a relevant engineering subject
Possession of National Safety Group Safety Passport

Preferred Qualification(s)
BSc Engineering
Membership of an appropriate engineering institute
Registered with the Engineering Council
Attended IOSH Managing Safety course
